Description
Louise Kerz Hirschfeld Cullman, who has been affiliated with the performing arts as a researcher and curator, and in other capacities as well, discusses her life with interviewer Susan Haskins. The interview begins with a discussion of her late husband, the artist Al Hirschfeld, and an examination of his drawing desk, chair, and tools. Subsequent topics include Cullman's early efforts to become an actress; her marriage to theater producer and designer Leo Kerz, and their life together; and her work as a cultural historian, through acting as a research consultant for television documentaries and museum exhibits devoted to prominent personalities in the arts. She tells how she first knew Al Hirschfeld and his wife Dolly Haas as hosts of dinner parties she would attend with her husband Kerz, and discusses her eventual marriage to Hirschfeld after both had been widowed. After his death in 2003, she would marry philantropist Lewis B. Cullman, who died at age 100 in 2019. She concludes by discussing various ways she has maintained Al Hirschfeld's artistic legacy.
