Content: In German propaganda, the idea was stressed that French refugees had had nothing to fear from the advancing German army, but had been panicked into fleeing by unfounded stories of murder, looting and rape concocted by their government. Alsace, a province on the French-German border, had changed hands several times between the two countries before being given to France after World War I.
