Depicts a night at the pleasure garden La Closerie des lilas (Jardin Bullier), which opened to the public in April 1847. Two couples in a spirited dance -- perhaps the quadrille naturaliste -- as two roués ogle one of the women. The patrons generally wear attire of the bourgeoisie. An outdoor setting with Oriental style archways and gas lamps.
