Interview with Doris Hering conducted by Ellen Frank for broadcast by the radio station WJCT-FM, on December 20, 1978 in Jacksonville, Florida. Streaming audio file (approximately 21 minutes). [Introduction of program followed by high-pitched noise.] Ellen Frank introduces Doris Hering, executive director of the National Association for Regional Ballet [NARB]; Doris Hering speaks with Ellen Frank about the growth of dance in the United States; NARB, including its origins and its membership requirements; NARB's five annual regional festivals; the summer (choreographic) craft conferences held for directors of regional companies; NARB's new national choreography plan, created to make new choreography available to regional directors; regional differences in dance as seen in dance companies and their repertoires; NARB's criteria for designating companies as professional; minimum annual budgets of dance companies and the necessity of constant fund-raising; how a community can best support for a company; the role of the artistic director as manager, teacher and choreographer; the current situation and the direction dance in the United States appear to be taking.
