Description
He hears from T[homas] Adams that the continental finances are not flourishing; from an Italian acquaintance, [Philip] Mazzei, he has learned that the Grand Duke of Tuscany has a large sum of ready money which he might be willing to put out at interest, also immense magazines; the Genoese have heavy deposits in the London bank which they might be induced to withdraw; Mazzei, who is a zealous whig, offers to undertake a mission from Congress to negotiate the matter; he thinks £600 would enable him to continue a year in Tuscany, in which time the purpose could be effected.
