Biographical/historical: In 1843 the equestrian performer Camille Leroux appeared with the Cirque des Champs Elysées in a pas de deux titled L'Ecossais et la sylphide [The Scotsman and the sylphide], which was probably inspired by the theme if not the choreography of Filippo Taglioni's ballet La sylphide (1832). Leroux's wreath, dress, and wings are based on the costume worn by Marie Taglioni as the sylphide.
