Notes
Biographical/historical: Josephine Schwarz (1908-2004) was a dancer and co-founder of the Dayton Ballet School. A Dayton, Ohio native, Schwarz took an interest in dance at a young age and spent a series of summers in Chicago with her sister, Hermene, studying at the Bolm School of Dance, and later at the Hellerau-Laxenberg School in Vienna, Austria. Together they founded the Schwarz School of Dance in Dayton, Ohio in 1927. In the 1930s, Josephine toured Europe with Adolph Bolm's company; studied with George Balanchine, Charles Weidman, and Doris Humphrey in New York City; appeared on Broadway; and performed with the Humphrey-Weidman company. In 1937, an injury cut her dance career short, and she returned to Dayton to run the dance school with Hermene, which was renamed the Dayton Ballet School. Josephine Schwarz was also a member of the Dance Advisory Panel of the National Endowment for the Arts, and received honorary doctorate degrees from Wright State University and the University of Dayton. She retired from the Dayton Ballet School in 1990, when she also received the Regional Dance America/Northeast Region Award.
Content: The collection dates from the 1890s to 1938, and contains an assortment of dance photographs that were given to Josephine Schwarz after initially being held by the dancer, Theodore Bekefi. The photographs are arranged alphabetically by individual or dance company, and includes images of Ballet Caravan, Ethel McVay, Lila Zali, and Theadore Bekefi and his family. The family photographs are mostly from the 1890s, and feature unidentified members of the Bekefi family. The collection also holds a selection of unlabeled photographs credited to the photographer, George Platt Lynes.
