Description
Thirty-fifth Anniversary Gala, American Ballet Theatre, held at the City Center of Music and Drama in New York City, on January 11, 1975. Streaming audio file (approximately 17 minutes). Agnes de Mille reminisces about the opening night of Ballet Theatre (now American Ballet Theatre), in 1940; De Mille reads a letter from President Gerald Ford and speaks about Lucia Chase's enormous contribution to ballet in the United States; Angier Biddle Duke, New York City Commissioner of Civic and Public Affairs, on behalf of the City of New York, awards the Handel Medallion to Lucia Chase and Oliver Smith; Chase accepts the award and expresses her gratitude to Oliver Smith and the dancers and staff of American Ballet Theatre [music and applause].
