Statement of responsibility: Signed on stone: Steinlen.
Biographical/historical: Swiss-born illustrator, printmaker, painter, and sculptor Theophile Alexandre Steinlen lived and worked in the Montmartre section of Paris. He frequently contributed illustrations to Gil Blas, as well as to other journals and books. Like his contemporary, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, he often depicted cabaret performers of the period.

Description
Images of dancers in action. One print depicts a female flamenco dancer, backed by a group of women who sing and clap to accompany her dance. It appeared on the cover of the 15 mai 1896 issue of the French periodical Gil Blas, and illustrated an article titled Espagne (Concert flamenco) by Georges Lecomte. In another print, a female cancan dancer in the street kicks up her leg before a group of male onlookers; at left a second woman, possibly a rival, watches with arms akimbo. A Scottish bagpiper in a kilt apparently provides musical accompaniment.
