Biographical/historical: Louis, Dauphin of France, 1729-1765, was the heir apparent and only surviving son of Louis XV. He predeceased his father, however, and never reigned. On Feb. 23, 1745, his marriage to the Infanta Maria Teresa Rafaela, daughter of Philip V of Spain, was celebrated in Versailles. The engravers Charles-Nicolas Cochin, a father and son who shared the same name, documented the wedding festivities in at least three prints: Decoration de la salle de spectacle (depicting the performance of the ballet La princesse de Navarre on Feb. 23, 1745), Decoration du bal paré donné par le roy (Feb. 24, 1745), and Decoration du bal masqué donné par le roy dans la grande gallerie du chateau de Versailles (Feb. 25-26, 1745). The first two were set in the covered riding school at Versailles, which was specially decorated for the two events.
