Description
Lecture given by Agnes De Mille to the Army Theatre Arts Association, possibly in August, 1973, in San Francisco (Calif.). Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 52 minutes). Introduction by Margaret Lynn of speaker Agnes de Mille; Agnes de Mille speaks about broad differences between United States Army theatrical productions and the commercial theater; reminiscences about her experiences with the United States military during World War II, including an anecdote about visiting her husband in Hobbs (N.M.); producing musical and dance entertainment for the military including her observations on audience responses; a sailor's account of the excitement of serving in the South Pacific; her general thoughts on the effects of war on society including the effect on women's status. Question and answer session; in response to questions from the audience, De Mille speaks about various topics, including working with non-dancers; observing a class taught by Igor Youskevitch; more advice on working with non-dancers; communicating with a production's choreographer; the increasingly effective use of dance in the theater by such artists as Jerome Robbins and Alwin Nikolais; thoughts on the current state of musical theater, referring to Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell as examples; performing in Moscow [in the former Soviet Union] including an anecdote about Congressman [John] Rooney; the relative lack of government support for the arts in the U.S; her thoughts on the positive role of the arts [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 2]. Agnes de Mille continues to speak about the positive role of the arts; reasons that folk dancing should be included in entertainment programs for the military; additional questions and responses from the audience including an audience member's comments about United States Army theatrical productions [applause followed by Margaret Lynn's closing remarks].
