Sound quality is fair to poor due to the low volume of the recording. However, for the most part, Walter Terry's voice is easily intelligible.
Description
Lecture by Walter Terry on the Varna International Ballet Competition and ballet in the United States. Recorded at a New York City Board of Education In-service course. Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 52 minutes). [Ambient noise.] Introduction of Walter Terry by an unidentified speaker; Walter Terry speaks about his early years as a dance critic; his experience attending the Varna International Ballet Competition [in 1974?] including his observations on some of the contestants and the standards by which they were judged; the Competition as an opportunity for cultural exchange and to see various styles of ballet; the early years of ballet in the United States; the growth of regional ballet [ends abruptly but continues directly on streaming audio file 2]. Streaming audio file 2 (approximately 20 minutes). Walter Terry speaks about the growth of regional ballet in the United States including the roles of Anatole Chujoy and Dorothy Alexander and regional ballet festivals; choreography based on local experiences [lecture ends at approximately 12:50 minutes and is followed by a question and answer session].
