Content: Title, date and performers provided by cataloger based on handwritten notes on original containers. The labels of the original containers are inconsistent with regards to the numbering of the reels.
Content: Handwritten notes on the original container of reel no. 1, front: "I Winter Br." ; back: "LaMonte Young. ; 2 Sounds (April 1960 12'15 ; (Reel 2 of 2) ; Drum stick on gong (composer?) ; (treble @ 5)" ; stamped: "DUB COPY". Handwritten notes on the inside of the original container of reel no. 1: "Tivoli Lisbon L (Low): wide open / B=1 / T =1 ; R (High): #7 / B=0 / T=0 ; Combra L (High)= #6 ; R (Low) = #6 ; (to: mic#4)" ; also there is a hand-drawn electrical diagram on the inside cover. Handwritten label on reel no. 1 hub: "WB HIGH".
Content: Handwritten notes on the original container of reel no. 2, front "II Winter Br." ; back: "LaMonte Young. ; 2 Sounds (April 1960 13'05 ; (Reel I of 2) ; Terry Riley & composer ; 2 cans each on window glass" ; stamped: "DUB COPY". Handwritten label on reel no. 2 hub: "WB LOW".
Content: Contains the sound elements to be played for performances of Merce Cunningham's Winterbranch (1964). According to David Vaughan's book, Merce Cunningham: 50 Years (Aperture: New York, 1997), the dance begins in silence for some time and then the sound is played. These recordings contain the complete sound element consisting of the pre-recorded high sound reel (no. 1) and pre-recorded low sound reel (no. 2) being played simultaneously.

Acquisition: Gift; Merce Cunningham Dance Foundation, 2011-2012.
Action: Transferred from the original open tape reels by the New York Public Library's Audio and Moving Image Preservation (PAMI) sound engineering staff at the Library for the Performing Arts on March 5, 2014. To create the streaming files, the sound engineers edited out the recording silences in the preservation files, thus the discrepancies in length between the preservation files and the streaming files.
