Description
Interview with Marian Van Tuyl conducted by Eleanor Lauer on February 4, 1977 in San Francisco, California, for the oral history archives of the National Dance Association of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. The final approximate 3:30 minutes of the interview is an oral postscript, added by Van Tuyl subsequent to the interview. Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 47 minutes) Marian Van Tuyl speaks with Eleanor Lauer about her background and training; her experiences teaching at the University of Chicago; performing; her further studies of dance and composition in New York; leaving Chicago to teach at Mills College; her experience at Mills College including the establishing of the dance department; her work with film including the experimental film Clinic of stumble; the magazine Impulse [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 2]. Streaming audio file 2 (approximately 29 minutes). Marian Van Tuyl speaks with Eleanor Lauer about the magazine Impulse; teaching composition at the Connecticut College summer school of dance; becoming involved in arts administration including the arranging of conferences and fund-raising; her thoughts on when children should start learning dance; [the final approximate 3:30 minutes of the recording consist of an oral postscript added by Van Tuyl, in which she speaks about her husband and children as well as composition, dance, and teaching].
