Description
In the first paper "Changing roles of Ga women in music", Professor Patsy Rowe talks about Dr. Barbara L. Hampton's in-depth study of music and evolving tribal traditions of Ghana women ("Ga"), primarily from the southeastern Accra region. Two pre-recorded audio clips of a song from both the Adowa and Gome ensembles was also presented. In the second paper, "Three ladies in China of historical importance in music: Madame Tang Shan, Pan Chao and Tsai Yen", ethnomusicologist Wen Ying Hsu talks about the musical, literary and historical impact by three women in Ancient China. In the last paper, "Woman's role in Welsh music since the 16th century", Dr. Claire Polin gives a full account of Welsh women's involvement and their influence of music, before and after the 16th century. From harp playing, poetry writing, earning bard degrees to performing/composing music, opportunities for women from Wales have always been plentiful. List of famous Welsh women: Elen (7th century Welsh poet), Nest [ferch Rhys] ("The Helen of the Wales"), her grandmother Gwenllian [ferch Gruffydd], Lady Winifred Herbert [Lady Winifred Maxwell Nithsdale], Mary Manuel (1700-), Margid Evans (harpist), Hester Lynch Piozzi and Anna Marie Williams (poets, friends of Samuel Johnson), George Eliot, Adelaide Kemble, Sarah Siddons, Lady Charlotte Guest [Lady Charlotte Schreiber], Maria Jane Williams, triple harpist Nansi Richards and composer Grace Williams.
