Sound quality is good overall. The recording is marred by extraneous noise including "tape hiss" and occasional short gaps as well as some distortion in the interviewee's voice. However, the speakers' voices are easily intelligible.
Description
Interview with Frederic Franklin conducted by Walter Terry in 1977 in New York (N.Y.). This interview is part of the research for Terry's book, Great male dancers of the ballet (Garden City, NY: Anchor Books, 1978). Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 47 minutes). Frederic Franklin speaks with Walter Terry about his training in both dance and drama; his early career including Leonide Massine's confidence in his abilities; Franklin's innate sense of rhythm and his musicality; the rise of technical virtuosity and its influence on teaching; the rigors of touring; Franklin as a dancer, in particular his mature, virile affect; his theatricality including an anecdote about Frederick Ashton's advice to "just dance;" his approach to dramatic roles for example, the role of Stanley [in Valerie Bettis's Streetcar named desire] as compared to the role of the Hussar in Blue Danube; learning new ways of dancing in Massine's ballets [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 2]. Frederic Franklin speaks with Walter Terry about how working with different choreographers prepared him to dance in various styles; working with Frederick Ashton; his partners including Alicia Markova and Alexandra Danilova; the importance of theatricality and intelligence in performance including an anecdote about Danilova and Sergei Pavlovich [Serge Diaghilev]; his own wide range of roles, including even a role with spoken lines, in Ruth Page's Billy Sunday.
