Description
The picture shows warriors fighting from a chariot in a battle from the Homeric (or Heroic) age of Greek warfare. Chariots were used in early Greek warfare as fighting platforms (as shown here, where they gave a warrior a height advantage, as when fighting from a horse). They could also be used as transportation to the battlefield for epic heroes who dismounted to fight on foot. The soldier in full armor in the chariot uses a spear to stab an approaching enemy armed with a sword before his foe on the ground can get to grips with him. The charioteer behind the warrior has his shield slung across his back for protection against attacks from behind. The dead soldier lying in front has been stripped of his armor by his foes, a common practice in battles of this era.
