Description
This illustration is from a section of a column ordered erected in Rome by emperor Marcus Aurelius to commemorate his victories over Germanic tribes in the so-called "Marcomannic Wars". Printed directly below the image are descriptions in Latin of parts of the scene, keyed to (very hard-to-find) numbers. Key to details in picture (not exact translations): 1. Roman soldiers overlap their shields like a turtle to protect themselves from missiles as they approach the wall. 2. The Germans throw rocks, wagon wheels, and torches from the ramparts down onto the attackers. 3. Roman horesmen cast javelins into the enemy on the walls. 4. Roman soldiers fling back the enemy's torches. 5. The Germans' wicker palisade, made of woven straw. 6. Speech following the battle. "Scene during the wars of 171-175 A.D. The Romans battling a fort in Germany. Bas-relief, column of Marcus Aurelius, Rome. Engr. by P. S. Bartoli, early 18th cen.."--written on border.
