Description
Dorothy Bird speaks about Louis Horst and Martha Graham. Kathleen Slagle Partion speaks, briefly, with Bird about Horst and Graham. The recording contained in streaming audio file 1 was recorded, in part, on September 19, 1975. The conversation with Partion, which is in the beginning of streaming audio file 2, was recorded on September 27, 1975. The location is not identified, but may be in Merrick, New York. Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 32 minutes). Dorothy Bird speaks about her recent trip to Saratoga [Saratoga Springs,N.Y.] with John Martin, in particular, their conversation about Louis Horst and his influence on Martha Graham; Martin's thoughts on how Stravinsky, Picasso, and Graham were alike in their artistic methods, and how they differed from George Balanchine; the relationship between Horst and Graham including his constant challenging of her work; the pleasures of country life, especially gardening; the contrast between the slums and the magnificent public buildings in Albany, New York; a dance history course she is developing [ends abruptly]. Streaming audio file 2 (approximately 13 minutes). Kathleen Slagle Partion speaks with Dorothy Bird about the relationship between Louis Horst and Martha Graham; Bird speaks about her feelings about Graham and Horst including how they have changed since her conversation with John Martin; seeing Orson Welles rehearsing the role of Tybalt.
