Description
This picture shows Roman siege equipment. A. and B. are roofs used to shelter men working a battering ram or digging under a wall. C. is a mantlet, a rolling shield used to protect archers. D. is a bow-operated drill for boring between and loosening stones in a wall. E. is part of another rolling shed. F. (?) G. and H. are Roman soldiers making a "testudo" (turtle) formation by overlapping their shields. This gave protection from enemy missiles while approaching a wall or gate.
