Description
There is some confusion over the identity of the subject of this portrait, believed to be James Lenox's sister, Alethea Carmer Lenox (1787-1806). It is thought that the portrait was commissioned posthumously to complement those of her older sisters painted by Gilbert Stuart, and also exhibited here. Other sources have identified the subject of the painting as Alethea Lenox (Donaldson( (1807-1873), the youngest of Robert and Rachel Lenox's twelve children, who was named for the sister who died shortly before her birth.
