DescriptionMatt Bieberfeld interviews Leonard Bernstein on the occasion of the upcoming 90th anniversary of Carnegie Hall (1981). Leonard Bernstein recalls his Carnegie Hall debut on November 14, 1943, when he was 25 years old musician struggling for success, and the sudden illness of conductor Bruno Walter forced him to conduct for the first time The New York Philharmonic, where he had recently been appointed assistant conductor, the first American to conduct the Philharmonic, and he became a musical celebrity overnight. The program includes the 1969 recording of Jennie Tourel who sings Tchaikovsky's song Night [words by Polonskiĭ] (piano accompaniment by Bernstein) (Part 1, 25:58-31:50 minutes), and the beginning section of Bernstein's music to the ballet Fancy free (The New York Philharmonic ; Leonard Bernstein, conductor) (Part 2, 16:59-21-47 minutes).
